Our ethos on interviews

We understand that interviews can be nerve-wracking, so we strive to make the experience as positive and informative as possible. At Solus, an interview is not just about us assessing you—it’s also about you deciding if Solus is the right fit for you.

We want every candidate to leave the process feeling respected, valued, and clear on what working at Solus is really like. We encourage authenticity, welcome diversity, and ensure that everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

We prioritise convenience and your comfort. Wherever possible, interviews are conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams. However, for roles that benefit from face-to-face interaction, we will arrange in-person meetings at one of our Solus locations or a suitable alternative location.

At Solus, we aim to make you feel at ease so that you can perform at your best. Here’s what you can expect:

Work history and role discussion: We’ll start by talking through your work history, the role you're applying for, and Solus as a company. This helps us understand your background and motivations.

Strength-based questions: These questions focus on your natural strengths and motivations. We’re interested in what you enjoy and where you’re most effective. Examples include:

What energises you?
When are you at your best?
Do you prefer working alone or in a team? Why?
What kind of tasks do you find most engaging?

Competency-based questions: These questions focus on your past experiences and how you've demonstrated skills in real situations. The STARR method is ideal for structuring your responses. Examples include:

Tell me about a time when you had to solve a difficult problem.
Give an example of when you worked as part of a team to achieve a goal.
Describe a situation where you had to adapt to a significant change.
Can you provide an example of when you had to meet a tight deadline?

Research the role and Solus Understand the key responsibilities of the position. Familiarise yourself with Solus, our values, and what makes us unique.

Prepare examples from your experience

Use the STARR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflect) to structure your answers. Think of examples that demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and adaptability.

The STARR Method:

Describe the context within which you performed a task or faced a challenge at work. Be specific about the situation to give the interviewer a clear understanding.

Example: "In my previous role as a project manager, our team was tasked with delivering a major project under a tight deadline."

Explain the actual task or challenge that was involved. What was your responsibility in that situation?

Example: "My responsibility was to ensure that the project was completed on time and within budget."

Detail the specific actions you took to address the task or challenge. Focus on what you did, rather than what the team or group did.

Example: "I implemented a new project management tool to streamline our processes, held daily stand-up meetings to track progress, and reallocated resources to critical tasks."

Share the outcomes or results of your actions. What was the impact of your efforts? Try to quantify your success with concrete data or examples.

Example: "As a result, we completed the project two weeks ahead of schedule and reduced costs by 15%."

Consider what you learned from the experience. How did it help you grow or improve? What would you do differently next time?

Example: "From this experience, I learned the importance of clear communication and resource management. In future projects, I would ensure even more frequent check-ins to catch potential issues early."
